
Keeping Your Outdoor Heaters Alive in the Rain
If you’ve ever put a heater outside, you know the two things that love to kill them: moisture and salt air. It’s a brutal combo. We build our units with an IP66 rating because, frankly, we don’t want water anywhere near the electrical terminals or the heating element. If water gets in there, you’re looking at short circuits or a burnt-out heater way sooner than you should. The secret to the seal An IP66 rating is basically a fancy way of saying the unit is dust-tight and can handle a heavy blast of water without flinching. We do this with high-temp silicone gaskets and reinforced seals around the frame. But here is the real trick: most heaters fail right where the cable enters the box. To fix that, we use compression glands. They lock the wiring down tight so splash water can’t just creep its way inside and fry the circuitry. Dealing with the “Fog” problem Then there’s the condensation. When the temperature swings, you get those little water beads forming inside the housing. That sounds harmless, but it’s actually a nightmare for the infrared tube. Those beads create “cold spots,” which make the glass expand unevenly. And when that happens? The quartz glass cracks. To stop this, we added specialized venting and anti-fog coatings. It lets the unit “breathe” so moisture doesn’t build up, but it still keeps the actual rain out. It keeps the tube dry, which means the heat stays steady across the whole element. A quick heads-up on setup These seals make the unit a tank, but there is a trade-off. Because it’s so tightly sealed, heat can get trapped inside. When you’re mounting it, just make sure there’s plenty of airflow around the back of the housing. You don’t want the internal wiring getting too hot. We built these to take a beating, especially if you’re near the ocean or in a gritty industrial area. By keeping the insides dry and the glass clear, your heating element lasts way longer. Just wire it up to a proper GFCI breaker, and you can let it rain or spray without worrying about the power tripping.
