
Getting Your SACMI IR Lamps to Actually Keep Up
If you’re running SACMI rotary blow molding machines, you know the pace is brutal. You’ve only got a tiny window to get those PET preforms heated just right. When your IR lamps lag or the temperature starts bouncing around, you see it immediately in the product. Thin walls here, weird pearlescence there. It’s a headache you don’t need. The struggle with heat lag The goal is simple: we want the gap between “power on” and “peak heat” to be as short as possible. We’ve spent a lot of time tweaking the tungsten filament diameter and the gas pressure inside the quartz. Why? To kill the thermal inertia. Basically, it means the lamp stops “warming up” and starts working almost instantly. On those high-speed lines, we push more wattage into a shorter tube. It’s all about power density. The preform needs to soak up that energy in a split second. But here’s the catch: your power grid has to be rock solid. If your voltage dips, your IR output drops. That’s how you end up with cold spots and wasted bottles. The nuts and bolts We use high-purity quartz because it lets the IR light through without fighting it. These are designed to be drop-in replacements for the SACMI OEM specs. Whether you’re dealing with R7s or something more specialized, we make sure the contact points are tight. No one wants to deal with arcing at the base. We also have coated options. These shift the heat spectrum so the energy actually hits the PET material instead of just heating up the machine frame. The reality of the shop floor Let’s be honest: pushing lamps to their absolute limit takes a toll. When you run them this hot and this fast, they’re going to wear out sooner. You’ll be swapping them more often. That’s just the trade-off for high performance. And please, for the love of your production line,keep your reflectors clean. It doesn’t matter how fast your lamps respond if your reflectors are dusty or pitted. If the heat can’t bounce back into the preform, you’re just wasting electricity.
