If you run a small powder coating shop, you know the struggle. Conventional convection ovens are huge. They take forever to heat up the aluminum, which means you end up with these massive tunnels taking up half your workspace. It’s frustrating. We do things differently. Instead of trying to heat up all the air in the room, we use customized shortwave infrared (IR) units. These go straight for the coating.
Getting the heat where it actually matters
Here’s the trick: to shrink your tunnel by half, you need heat density. We use IR lamps that hit the aluminum surface with radiant energy the second it enters the tunnel. Because the wavelength is tuned specifically to the coating, the whole process happens in a blink. You aren’t sitting around waiting for the air to get hot. The energy just hits the part. Boom. Done.
The nuts and bolts
We build these as modular cells using quartz heating elements that can cycle on and off fast. You can just drop them right into your current line or set them up as a standalone spot. Since we use high-wattage lamps to keep the footprint small, there is one thing to watch out for: your power. This much concentrated heat pulls a lot of juice. Just make sure your wiring and breakers can handle the peak amperage when the system first ramps up. You don’t want to trip a breaker in the middle of a big job.
What this actually feels like on the floor
Switching from convection to IR changes the whole vibe of your workflow. Everything moves faster. You get your floor space back. But, there’s a catch. You have to be precise with the distance. If the aluminum profiles get too close to the lamps, you’ll scorch the finish. Too far, and you’re wasting energy. That’s why we don’t just ship you a box. We calibrate the lamp height specifically to your profiles so you don’t have to guess.
