
Stop the Bubbles: A Better Way to Cure Metal Paint
Ever deal with “skinning”? It’s a nightmare. You’re using standard IR lamps, the surface of the paint dries way too fast, and it creates this hard shell. The problem is that the solvents underneath get trapped. They have nowhere to go, so they fight their way out, leaving you with those annoying pinholes and bubbles. It ruins a perfectly good finish. We found a way around this using gold-coated shortwave IR radiators. It sounds fancy, but it’s actually pretty simple.
Curing from the inside out
Most quartz lamps just throw a broad spectrum of heat at your part. But the gold coating acts like a filter. It bounces the long-wave radiation back into the filament, which cranks up the internal temperature and pushes out a concentrated blast of short-wave IR. Here is why that matters: short-wave IR doesn’t just hit the surface and stop. It punches right through the paint and hits the metal first. The metal heats up fast and radiates that heat back up through the paint. Instead of sealing the top first, the paint cures from the bottom up. This gives the solvents plenty of time to escape before the surface closes. No traps, no bubbles.
The catch (and how to handle it)
Now, these tubes put out a massive amount of heat. It’s intense. You can hit your curing temps in a few seconds, which is great for your timeline, but you have to be careful. If your conveyor is moving too slow or the lamps are sitting too close, you’ll scorch the paint. You can’t just “set it and forget it.” You’ll need a snappy PID control system to keep things from overheating.

The best part? We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You don’t need to rebuild your whole line. Because the gold coating makes the filament run hotter, we use high-grade quartz so the tubes don’t just pop. You get a faster cycle and a finish that actually looks the way it should.
