
Getting a Deep Cure in PTFE Without Burning Everything
Curing PTFE (your standard Teflon) is a bit of a balancing act. You need enough heat to get those polymer chains to bond properly, but if you overdo it, you’ll scorch the substrate before the coating even sets. It’s a frustrating spot to be in. To fix this, we use a mix of custom-spectrum IR lamps and high-reflectivity aluminum plates. The goal is simple: push the heat deep into the coating, not just sizzle the top.
Why “Surface Heat” is a Trap
Here’s the thing about standard IR lamps: they often hit the surface way too hard. You end up with a “skinned over” effect where the top looks great, but the base is still under-cured. That’s a recipe for peeling and failure. We tweak our lamps to shift the emission peak toward longer wavelengths. Think of it as changing the “frequency” of the heat so it actually sinks into the PTFE layer instead of just bouncing off the surface. And those aluminum reflector plates? They aren’t just there for show. We machine them from high-grade aluminum to catch the wasted radiation and throw it right back into the workpiece. It makes the heat denser where you actually need it and stops you from wasting electricity.
The Nitty-Gritty on Heat and Hardware
We use aluminum because it can handle the brutal temperatures these high-wattage quartz tubes put out. It also pulls heat away from the lamp ends, which keeps your sockets from frying. But you have to be careful with your conveyor speed. If you let the parts linger too long under those reflectors, you’ll overheat the PTFE and ruin the batch. Once they leave the IR tunnel, you need a cooling zone that can quench the parts immediately. No lingering.
Keeping it Running
Our systems are built to be drop-in replacements. You don’t need to rebuild your whole line; they just slide into your existing heating banks. We also use heavy-duty wiring because deep-cure cycles pull a lot of current. One quick tip: check your reflectors for oxidation every six months. If the surface gets dull, your efficiency tanks. Your lamps will have to run hotter to make up for the loss, and that’s how you end up shortening the life of your equipment. Keep them shiny, and everything stays smooth.
