
Getting the Heat Right in PET Preforms
If you’re running high-speed PET Blowing, you know the struggle. It’s not just about cranking up the heat. The real trick is getting that warmth deep into the thickest parts of the preform without burning the outside to a crisp. That’s why we tweak our infrared lamps. We shift the emission spectrum so it actually hits the absorption peaks of the PET resin. It just works better. Power and the “Cold Spot” Problem We build these tubes for high-wattage output. Why? Because when your cycle times are fast, your lamps need to bounce back quickly. By playing with the voltage configurations, we’ve bumped up the power density per millimeter. This means the lamp recovers its temperature almost instantly between preforms. You get a steady flow of heat, which kills those annoying cold spots in the bottle base. One heads-up, though: high wattage means more heat in the oven. Make sure your cooling fans are actually doing their job. If your ventilation is weak, you’re just asking for your lamps to burn out early. The Secret is in the Glass We use heavy-wall quartz glass. It has to be tough to handle the internal pressure of the halogen cycle. But the real magic is the coating. We apply a specific layer to the tube that filters out the light the plastic reflects and amps up the wavelengths it actually absorbs. Less wasted energy. Faster heat soak. Simple. If a tube is even slightly crooked in the rack, you’ll end up with uneven walls in your bottles. Every time you wire up a new set, take a second to check your reflectors.
