
Getting Your Bathroom Heater Wattage Right
I see it all the time. An engineer specs the exact same heater for a tiny powder room and a massive master bath. It’s a classic mistake. You end up either throwing money away on electricity or standing in a room that just won’t get warm. The trick is to look at the actual size of the room and what it’s made of before picking your lamp.
The Volume Problem
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t actually warm up the air. It warms you and the things around you. In a small bathroom, a 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty to get you feeling cozy fast. If you try to cram a 1200W lamp into a tiny space, you’ll hit the temperature limit almost instantly. The thermostat will just keep clicking on and off. It’s called “short-cycling,” and it’s a great way to kill your relays and spike your power bill. For the bigger bathrooms, don’t just buy one giant 2000W lamp. That’s a recipe for “hot spots”—where you’re roasting in one corner but freezing in the other. Instead, spread the load. Three 600W units scattered around the room work way better.
Watch Your Wiring
Higher wattage means faster heat, but it also puts a lot of pressure on your electrics. If you’re working with an older building, be careful. If you hook up four 1000W lamps to a single 15A circuit, you’re probably going to trip the breaker the second you flip the switch. Not a great way to start a morning.
A Quick Cheat Sheet
If you’re not sure where to start, try this: ***Small rooms (under 5m²):**Stick with 400W - 600W. ***Medium rooms (5m² - 10m²):**Go for 800W - 1200W. ***Large rooms (10m²+):**1500W or more, but split it across a few different fixtures. And if you want that “instant” warmth the moment you step in, go with shortwave infrared. It hits the target immediately. Just keep in mind that if your ceilings are super high, you’ll need a bit more power to make up for the distance.
