
Stop Replacing Your Blow Molding Machines—Just Fix the Heat
If you’re running a small or mid-sized shop, you probably have an old blow molding machine that’s seen better days. It still works, but those cycle times are killing you. Here’s the secret: you don’t actually need to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine just to get more bottles out the door. Usually, the bottleneck isn’t the machine itself—it’s the heat. By swapping your old heating elements for high-density infrared (IR) lamps, you can slash your pre-heating time and get your PET preforms to the right temperature without the guesswork.
Let’s talk about heat density
When you’re picking out a replacement lamp, don’t get bogged down in the manual. Just remember that voltage and wattage are what actually drive your speed. Higher wattage means more intense IR radiation. It’s simple: the hotter the lamp, the faster the PET hits that “sweet spot” where it’s ready to mold. In the real world, this means you can often get away with a shorter oven while still hitting your targets for heavier preforms. It’s a huge win for your floor space.
The gear: Quartz and Halogen
We use heavy-wall quartz glass for the tubes. Why? Because it lets the short-wave IR radiation slide right through without soaking up the heat itself. Then there’s the halogen gas. It basically cleans the filament as it runs, which keeps the light consistent and stops the lamps from burning out every few weeks. It’s a much more stable way to work. As for the plugs, you’ll mostly see R7s or SK15. They’re the industry standard because they actually stay put. When your machine is humming and vibrating, you don’t want a lamp flickering or arcing. **One quick tip:**If you’re dropping these into a decades-old rig, double-check your sockets. If the fit is loose, it’ll spark, heat up, and burn out your contact point. Make sure it’s snug.
The “Catch” (And how to handle it)
These lamps are mostly “plug and play,” but there is one thing to watch out for. When you jump from a weak, old tube to a high-density halogen lamp, you’re putting a lot more heat into the oven. If your cooling fans are old or undersized, they might not be able to keep up. If you don’t have enough airflow, you risk warping your PET or, worse, overheating the machine’s frame. Before you crank the wattage to the max, take five minutes to check your ventilation. It’s a small step that saves you from a massive headache later.
